Are probiotics good for me?

What if I tell you that there is a big possibility that the probiotic in your supplement cupboard is doing your more harm than good? That it can contribute to your symptoms and make them worse.

Why probiotics may not work

There is a big hype in the media about probiotics and you have probably picked up a multi-strain probiotic to help you repopulate the good bacteria in your gut. The promise is that it will help with digestion, bloating, gas and more. Sadly the truth is a bit more complicated. Many gastrointestinal issues might have similar symptoms and if you suffer from Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) probiotics can make your pesky symptoms even worse.

Let me explain... Have you ever eaten a healthy meal and afterwards feel like you are 6 months pregnant? This is the crafty work of bacteria, they create gas like methane or hydrogen as a byproduct when they ferment fibre. This can be painful and make you blow up like a balloon.  Gut bacteria plays an important part in our general health by breaking down toxins, producing B and K vitamins and producing by-products that are protective against gut diseases.

Are bacterias actually a good thing?

Bacteria is a good thing, that is why we take probiotics right?! Indeed they are! But here is the thing… ONLY if they are in the correct areas of the digestive system. SIBO occurs when the good or bad bacteria is growing in the wrong area, the small intestine rather than their dedicated happy place, the large intestine. Giving your digestive system more bacteria in the form of probiotics to grow in the wrong place is a recipe for disaster!

Here are a few quick questions to help you figure out what is happening with your bacteria intestine positioning. Let’s take a look!

THE SIBO QUIZ - which of the below symptoms do you have?

  • Bloating
  • Flatulence or belching
  • Constipation and/or diarrhea
  • Low stomach acid
  • Fibre rich food increases symptoms
  • Chronic stomach pain and/or nausea
  • Skin issues as rosacea or eczema
  • High B12 in blood test
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Mood disorder

If you answer yes to many of the above, you might have SIBO.
Pease Note: Symptoms are very similar to irritable bowel syndrome and other bowel issues.

Please don’t suffer alone, come and see me online for a consultation and we can help you to figure out if you have SIBO and what course of action you could take.
